Dear Potential Entrepreneur,
Have you ever found yourself in the following situation...?
You're sitting at a café next to the beach. In front of you is your laptop and your mobile phone – two of the things you need to help you run your business.
Having already been to the gym for a work-out, you're quickly finishing up a couple of tasks before meeting with a friend.
You decide to make time for a break later on, as the water seems like it should be good – and maybe organise a meeting with a business partner over a game of golf, while you're at it.
You lean back, take another sip from your glass...
And nearly fall off your office chair as you wake up.
The clock is still ticking and you have a long work-day ahead of you – filled with managers that have their own clashing agendas and impossible tasks, which unfotunately, have to be done by yesterday...
Reality
The day-dream might go a bit differently for you, but usually at this point, the words, "I should be working for myself," enters your mind – even if just for a brief moment.
Every aspiring entrepreneur knows the thought very well... The question is: Why is it always so tough to let go of a job that you'd rather not have?
The following "reasons," might seem familliar: It starts with, "I would, but..."
- ...what if I can't find any clients?
- ...what if my idea doesn't work?
- ...what if I don't have what it takes?
- ...what if I don't have enough savings to pull me through?
- ...what if it takes too long to make a profit?
- ...what if I fail?
And all of those can be summed up in one large "what if," namely:
"What if I lose my income?"
The fact is, that we all have responsibilities that demand a steady stream of cash-flow coming in from month-to-month – we depend on something we call "job security."
But, if you've ever thought about being your own boss, then you've also started doubting the truth behind it – is "job security," really that secure?
Job Security vs. Income security
People lose their jobs for various reasons beyond their control – and even if not, "getting fired" is an axe that their employers can easily hang above their heads if they don't keep on producing ever faster and more efficiently...
So, what is the main benefit that "job security" provides – and why do most people sell their lives and mental happiness, in order to keep it?
The answer is in the term "income security."
Most of us have been tricked into believing that "job security" equals "income security."
If you speak to people and ask them why they stick to a job they hate, it usually comes out that they're actually just looking for a steady pay-cheque.
And we agree, there is nothing wrong with that - all of us could do with a steady income. Its better than a flaky income.
The problem is, they might not be seeing the complete picture.
The Other Piece Of The Puzzle
Think about it for a moment...
When recruiting for new employees, a company is in a bit of a dilemma - namely:
What should they advertise?
They could say that...
- ...the new employee will spend most of their time in an office - with people they might, or might not get along with;
- ...due to office politics and unrealistic dead-lines, the new employee's stress levels will start affecting their health in a negative way;
- ...they'll be spending less time with their families during the week - and sometimes, if the company needs them to, during weekends as well;
- ...they'll be paid less than what they're worth, because otherwise the company will be running at a loss.
Its not a pretty picture.
The fact is, that the company needs loyal employees, otherwise they'll spend all their money recruiting and never getting any projects off the ground...
So, what can they do?
Simple.
Why not offer their potential recruits something that caters to their basic needs, like "income security" - and then keep them loyal by selling them the idea that working in a job is the only way to achieve it?
"Job Security" is a Myth.
